Fuck. I am way past due for a serious road trip. Knocking some miles down last month on the Big Mountain Run was great, but it really only served as an appetizer. It only made me want to hit the road for a long stretch even more. It doesn't help that I've been reading a bunch of books about long distance overland motorcycle adventure as well. The best thing about these books are that the guys who wrote them are just regular dudes that made up their minds to get on a bike and take off. All of their stories only prove over and over that there's not a big magic trick involved. Make some kind of a plan, prepare yourself and your bike as best you can and get the fuck on with it. It's a big world and there are so many awesome things to see on two wheels. The couple of good trips I've taken have really only served to light a fire that can't be put out. Once you start to learn some things about just where you can go on a bike your mind races with the possibilities. Camping in the middle of the Sahara under a perfectly clear, star filled night sky. Standing on the Mongolian Steppes without another soul in sight. Trudging through some crazy, muddy track in the Ugandan jungle. It's all been done, which means it can be done again. I don't realistically see doing any of those things in the near future, but the fact is I've never even ridden a bike in every state in my own country. Never ridden in Canada, Mexico, Central or South America. But I will. Maybe age and/or the passage of time is pressing on me. Maybe I'm just sick of working a shitty, boring as fuck job that only emphasizes how much life is passing by that isn't ever coming back. The reason doesn't matter, only the motivation it's given me to get cracking. I've got a purpose, so the only other step is to have a plan. Of course, that's always the tricky part, but what else is there to do? It begins........
